As Helena endures a cycle of interrogation, fragile recovery, and unsettling connection with Kaine, she must piece together what she did during the war, what terrible secret her lost memories contain, and who she wants to be in a world built on alchemy, undead horrors, and morally gray choices, with the nature of their relationship and her ultimate decision left unrevealed.

The magic system is the most interesting thing I have read this year — a cost you can actually feel, paid by someone who keeps deciding it is worth it. The prose occasionally reaches further than it can hold, but I would rather a book overreach than play safe.
