By:Stacia Stark
We Who Will Die is a dark romantasy about Arvelle, a young woman scraping by in the brutal Thorn district while trying to protect her two younger brothers in a world ruled by ancient vampires. When a powerful vampire forces her into a magically binding bargain, she must enter the deadly Sundering arena—where only the strongest survive trials designed for the emperor’s future elite guard—in order to get close enough to attempt the impossible: assassinate the vampire emperor himself. Inside the arena and court, Arvelle is pulled into a dangerous web involving the cold, enigmatic Primus who once broke her heart and the emperor’s sadistic son, Rorrik, both of whom seem to know more about her emerging powers than she does, pushing her to question her past, her magic, and who she can afford to trust if she wants to keep her family alive.

Enormous cast, enormous map, enormous body count. I needed a notebook for the first two hundred pages and I did not resent it once. The romance is a slow burn measured in books rather than chapters, so go in knowing you are committing to the whole shelf.
